Model predictions of nitric acid scavenging by an air parcel model and a two-dimensional dynamic cloud model with detailed microphysics are compared with corresponding predictions for parameterized microphysics for the same initial conditions. In general the gas uptake proceeds slower in the model with parameterized microphysics than in the model with detailed microphysics and, the larger the drop size, results in a slower mass transfer. Abstract A study was carried out to model mass transfer properties in biotrickling filters, treating isopropanol as the target pollutant. This study was extended to the mass transfer of oxygen related to the fact that the treatment of hydrophilic compounds by biotrickling filtration is often limited by oxygen. A simple method for each compound was developed based on their physical properties. The influence of temperature on Henry’s law constant of isopropanol was determined. Abstract The mass transfer performance of a gas–liquid self-ingesting stirred reactor is reported both for coalescing and non-coalescing systems. The vessel features are a high aspect ratio and a rather narrow multiple-impeller draft tube, through which the gas phase is ingested and led down to the vessel bottom, where it is finely dispersed into the liquid rising in the annular portion of the vessel. The electrochemical oxidation of organics in water performed in micro reactors on boron doped diamond (BDD) anode was investigated both theoretically and experimentally in order to find the influence of various operative parameters on the conversion and the current efficiency CE of the process. Abstract A simplified version of the dynamic pressure method for measuring mass-transfer coefficients in gas–liquid systems is proposed. With this method oxygen concentration in the liquid phase is monitored after a sudden change of total pressure is applied to the system. Abstract A dynamic model describing styrene abatement was developed for a two-phase partitioning bioreactor operated as a biotrickling filter (TPPB-BTF). The model was built as a coupled set of two different systems of partial differential equations depending on whether an irrigation or a non-irrigation period was simulated. The maximum growth rate was previously calibrated from a conventional BTF treating styrene (Part 1).
